Books! The Magic is Real!

Can a Read Across America Assembly Program Get Kids Excited about Reading…in Just 45 Minutes?

A good Read Across America assembly program will get your kids excited. A great one will get your kids excited about reading! And that’s important because reading is the single most valuable skill a child will learn in school. It’s the foundation of every other topic they study.

I’m Joe Romano and for the past 30 years, I’ve been performing my Read Across America school assemblies in New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and our nation's capital, Washington DC. Schools bring me back year after year because I do what I promise: get kids excited about reading!

But don’t take my word for it. Here’s what one recent client said after booking my amazing reading school assembly program:

“Joe Romano has a way of engaging students and keeping them focused as he delivers messages about the importance of reading… Highly recommended!”

This Reading Assembly Program Brings Classic Children's Books to Life…with Magic!

My reading assembly, “Books! The Magic is Real!” will have your students running to your library, eager to check out books. How do I do it? By using amazing magic to highlight the plots and characters of famous children’s books!

Many magicians claim to do this, but I bring it to another level. The magic effects your students will see look like movie special effects come to life! While the magic and the books I use vary from year to year as certain books become more popular, here are just a few of the favorites students love the most:

  • I turn one student into Harry Potter and then that student performs incredible feats of magic!
  • After I sketch a cartoon of Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the drawing comes to life! Greg’s eyes and mouth both animate and we have a conversation!
  • While talking about comic books and graphic novels, the school assembly gets a visit from Spider-Man in the most unusual way!
  • There’s DANGER in the air as a 4-foot-long snake* jumps out of a basket to find a selected card!
    *Don’t worry, it’s not a real snake.

A School Assembly Program that Gets Your Students Actively Involved!

Kids don’t want to just go to school assemblies. They want to be involved! And getting involved is great for learning, too. When students are actively involved, they retain more.*

The Books! The Magic is Real!” school assembly gets several students onstage to participate. We also get the entire audience (including teachers!) involved. You will see your students laughing, hear them clapping, and gasping in amazement! (And yes, this assembly is available as an in-person program OR a virtual show!)

This Reading School Assembly is Perfect ANY Time of the School Year

Many schools want assembly programs during Read Across America week in March. But “Books! The Magic is Real!” is perfect for any time of your school year!

This reading assembly is perfect for:

  • Promoting your book fair
  • Reading incentive programs
  • Parents As Reading Partners (PARP)
  • Right before summer vacation to help prevent “summer slide”

Wait, you might be thinking, “How does this assembly show combat summer slide?” Here’s how…

Kids like to run and play to exercise their muscles and stay healthy. People forget that their brain is a muscle too! Reading is a great way to keep kids’ brains active. And reading during the summer months is the most effective way* to eliminate the dreaded “summer slide.”

Most parents and educators know that the “summer slide” is when kids backslide academically during extended breaks. Without consistent learning to stimulate the brain, like any muscle, it begins to atrophy.

The good news? The act of reading books is one of the best, easiest ways to stop the “summer slide.” *

My assembly program encourages kids to read during the summer. Seeing classic book characters and stories come to life will move your students to explore these stories on their own.
